Using PowerShell with Microsoft Dynamics NAV – Part 1 (Getting Started, Changing NAV License)

PowershellISE-smallThis is the first post in a five part series on using PowerShell with Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

In the video, I discuss the different ways of accessing PowerShell, how to load the NAV Command Applet, and how to change a NAV license using PowerShell. For comparison, I also show how to change/upload a NAV license the traditional way from the NAV Development Client.

If you are unable to view the video below (or to watch it in HD), click here to view it directly on YouTube.

Note that the script in the download link is for NAV 2016. In the Import-Module line, replace 90 with 80 if you have NAV 2015 installed. Replace with 71 for NAV 2013 R2.

Come back next week for Part 2 of the Using PowerShell with NAV series!

How do I find the latest Released Cumulative Updates (Hotfixes) for Microsoft Dynamics NAV?

If you’ve ever gone looking for the latest cumulative updates for NAV on Microsoft CustomerSource (or PartnerSource), but don’t know which one it is, you’ll probably agree with me that it can be a time consuming task.

Cumulative UpdateWell, there is good news! Microsoft has “fast publish” articles that maintain a list of released Cumulative Updates for each of the following versions: NAV 2013, 2013 R2, and 2015. The Cumulative Updates are typically released at a monthly frequency.

You may see a “Referring link not Secure” message since we are an external source linking to a Microsoft KB article. Click on Continue to proceed to the article. You may need to sign in with your Microsoft CustomerSource / PartnerSource login.

If you are using NAV 2015, the Platform update / hotfix directories (NST, RTC, etc.) are no longer available “out-of-the-box.” A few additional steps need to be taken to get those individual subfolders so you can patch the files on the NAV server and existing NAV client workstations. Instructions for this can be found here: will also be posting a how-to video to walk you through the steps of getting back these directories. We will update this article with a link to the walkthrough once it is posted.

Creating and Copying Companies in NAV 2013 R2 (and newer)

Creating a new company in NAV was always so simple, wasn’t it? Go to File > Company > New in the Classic Client (or Development Environment, as it’s now called) and you were on your way.

If you’ve tried doing that in NAV 2013 R2, you were probably surprised to find that Company is no longer listed under the File menu. Who moved my cheese?!

No need to stress, because the function still exists. It’s just been moved to the RoleTailored Client.

You can watch the complete walkthrough below or directly on our YouTube channel (

Go to Departments > Administration > IT Administration > General > (Lists) > Companies (or you can use the Search bar and type in ‘Companies‘).

On this page, click New on the action item on the ribbon, and you will be prompted to enter a name for the new company. Press OK and you’re done (after some “hourglassing” as an old client of mine likes to say).

There’s also a Copy action item on the ribbon. To use this function, first select the company you want to copy from the list of Companies by clicking on it, then click Copy on the ribbon and enter the name you’d like to assign to the new company.
